An interest in observing and trying to understand people has led Matt to explore portraiture as an avenue of expression. He is constantly searching for his own individual language, adapting his sound understanding of traditional painting techniques to create work that feels contemporary.
Matt's paintings derive from film stills, capturing moments that would otherwise perhaps go unnoticed. It’s not the films themselves that are important to him, but the situation behind the gaze of a character. His process involves using a relatively low tech camera to take photos of films stopped at particular points, which he then edits to adjust the picture, applying slight changes of contrast and exposure to change one’s perspective of the situation.
